Divergent relationship between brain structure and cognitive functioning in patients with prominent negative symptomatology

Investigating commonalities in underlying pathology of cognitive dysfunction and negative symptoms schizophrenia is important, as both are core features the disorder linked to brain structure abnormalities. We aimed explore relationship between cognition, schizophrenia. A total 225 patients with Schizophrenia spectrum 283 healthy controls from Norwegian Thematically Organized Psychosis (TOP) cohort were included this study. Patients categorized into four patient subgroups based on severity symptoms: no-negative- (NNS), threshold-negative- (TNS), moderate-negative- (MNS), prominent-negative (PNS) subgroups. MRI measures volume, mean cortical thickness surface area pre-selected regions tested for relationships general ability symptom Positive associations found thickness, cognition dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), orbitofrontal (OFC), fusiform gyrus (FG) left anterior cingulate (ACC), but no differences In PNS subgroup, was conversely negatively associated volume ACC. These results indicate that prominent have different ACC, which may point abnormal neurodevelopment.
